Miami’s coffee scene, much like the culinary scene, has seen a huge spurt of growth over the past couple of years. Per’La Specialty Roasters graced us with their presence just over a year ago and to be honest, it very quickly became my coffee of choice. Partners Paul Massard and Chris Nolte first became friends years ago at University of Miami and were reconnected with a simple “happy birthday” message from one to the other on Facebook.
One has an expert sense of taste (he can name every one of their roasts in a blind tasting, I’ve seen it!) and the other is a master at marketing and branding (gotta love the classy pearl bags that match their name perfectly), together this duo is making their mark in Miami. Per’La coffee is currently carried in over 30 restaurants and hotels all over the city, including the SLS right here in Brickell. Some spots, like Eating House and Glass & Vine, have created their own special blend. Last month they teamed up with Wynwood’s JugoFresh to make coffee infused healthy juice goodness!
The self-financed team even has their own Chase commercial and recently spoke at a Chase For Business event. All this within the first year?! Looks like there’s no stopping them!
I stopped by their warehouse for a cupping – that’s where various cups of coffee are made using all of the exact same variables (water, time, amount) except for the type of coffee, and is used to observe the taste and aromas of the coffee to properly grade them or make sure they are made properly. Watching the progress from start to finish and listening to their knowledge about all aspects of the business allowed me to get a peek into the insane amounts of passion these guys have for what they are doing. Sometimes the best ideas and partnerships come when we are least expecting them! Let’s just say, not only are we more awake in the morning because of them, but we are really excited to see how far they take this!
